Design decisions must be user-centred. We’re solving their problems so it is their particular needs that we should understand and empathise with. Always ask whether a design delivers value to users.
Often and with clarity. Working in a team requires clear descriptions of the ‘what’ and ‘why’. The ‘what’ tells others of the design details. The ‘why’ helps them understand the rationale behind the ‘what’.
Form and function
The primacy of function remains paramount, but form is not to be forgotten. Whether it’s for the aesthetic-usability effect, or to add to the integrity of your products overall offering.
One of the best ways to solve problems, especially large ones, is to break it down into smaller parts. This way we gain clarity on what makes up the problem, and what elements need addressing. Where possible use data to inform your decisions.
Labour of love
When I work on a project, it becomes my world. I work towards the best possible solutions, and never settle until I feel satisfied that I’ve achieved my best.
Keep a team mind-set and consider how a decision might affect others in the unit or greater organisation, whether it’s developers or stakeholders. Make life easier for everyone by providing sensible hand-off material. Share knowledge, encourage growth and support individuals who need help.
